Honda NSX Project Will be Dropped

Due to the economic crisis and some major restructuring that is taking place within Honda, it would seem that the Honda NSX project was dropped in favour of the more realistic "hybrid drivetrain" path. The Honda NSX project would have been the fastest car the Japanese company has ever produced and, powered by its massive V10 engine, it would have become a direct rival to other supercars such as Ferrari and Porsche, Autocar reported.

Along with the announcement that the Honda NSX will be cancelled, Honda CEO Takeo Fukui said that the company also abandoned the plan to introduce the Acura in Japan in 2010. The official is convinced that the future for Honda is to invest in hybrid drive trains, "the most realistic path for CO2 reduction at this moment," thus "achieving mass market penetration as soon as possible."

A few months ago, when the NSX was announced, Honda CEO Takeo Fukui said that the car will not be a hybrid and that is definitely coming. It would seem that time indeed changes anything.

He said that the NSX will be powered by a V10 petrol engine that was still in production and that most definitely it will not feature an electric engine. The car was designed to have speed, be easy to drive and considerate to the environment. The V10 5.0 liter engine is expected to produce around 500 bhp and it would be very economical for the power and capacity it has.

Fans of the NSX, a model that went off sale in 2005 after 15 of Japanese domination, will feel the cancellation of the model like a blow to the chest.
