Honda Mid-Engined Sportscar Patent Images Leaked, Could Be S2000 Successor

Patent images for a brand new Honda "supercar" have just emerged online. They show a model that's even more futuristic than the NSX, but probably a little smaller.

These images were sent to us by Amsterdam-based auto magazine Autovisie. They clearly show a Honda model, as the typical wing design of the front end is evident, but beyond that, little else is known.

SUVs are supposed to be what everyone wants to buy, but Honda doesn't care, and we love them for it. In fact, even though Toyota have the Mirai FCV, we'd say Honda are they ones making the most futuristic cars right now.

These patent images perfectly tie in with reports that a successor for the S2000 is being planned. This would fit under the NSX in the range, but feature a similar powertrain setup. A plug-in hybrid or conventional hybrid setup is expected, where power comes from the same 2-liter turbo used by the Civic Type R.

Also being considered for the project is a new 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbo, which will make its debut next year on the American Civic sedan. In addition to the turbo, two electric motors will be added, making this an all-wheel drive sportscar, just like the BMW i8.

The patent images were submitted on May 27th to the US Patent Office, which suggests this could be an Acura model, but the design works better as a Honda.

Fans of the original S2000 have been demanding a successor be built for quite some time. Production ended with the 2009 model year and by that time, over 65,000 S2000 models were sold in the US since the introduction of the roadster in 1999. There were another 45,000 cars in other markets worldwide.

If they can give us a BMW i8 alternative that looks this good for about $70,000, it will boost the Honda brand value tremendously. However, knowing what happened with the NSX, we expect it won't be ready for at least two more years.
