Honda Jazz Hybrid to Debut in RAC Future Car Challenge

Honda FCX ClarityHonda CR-ZHonda Motor founder, Soichiro Honda, tackles the London to Brighton event in 1985
The British division of Honda announced today it will be entering three of its cleanest cars in the RAC Future Challenge this November. The Brighton to London event will therefore witness the debut of the new Jazz Hybrid, a model that will be accompanied by the hydrogen-powered FCX Clarity fuel cell car and the CR-Z sporty hybrid coupe.

All these three vehicles will be retracing the route taken by Honda Motor founder , Soichiro Honda, when he tackled the London to Brighton event in 1985.

All participating cars in the Challenge are measured on the energy they use on the route, with those using the least energy over the 60-mile run to be crowned as winners.

The Jazz with hybrid technology features Honda’s petrol-electric IMA system to lower emissions to 104 g/km and improve fuel economy to 64.2 UK mpg / 3.66 l/100km (preliminary figures). The model retains all the most important characteristics found in the non-hybrid version including the unique folding Magic Seats. The Honda Jazz Hybrid will be available to order in the UK from early 2011.

Joining the Jazz with hybrid tech will be the world’s first production fuel cell car, the FCX Clarity. This car emits no harmful exhaust emissions with only water vapour coming out of the tailpipe. The FCX Clarity offers a driving range of 270 miles (435 km) and a 3-5 minute refuelling time.

Finally, the third car to enter the competition is the CR-Z, powered by the same petrol-electric IMA hybrid powertrain as the Jazz. The car offers a fuel economy of 56.5 UK mpg (4.16 l/100km) and a low exhaust emissions package.
