2013 figures just released by Honda's US division show the company once known only for little motorcycles is now a net-exporter bringing fewer cars into the country than it exports ones locally assembled.
Last year 108,705 models made at their North American facilities, while only 88,537 were brought in. This 'build them where you sell them' attitude also helps the bottom line through cost savings.
Overall, Honda produced 1,781,213 vehicles in North America last year, a 5.3 percent increase. Of that total, 1309,917 units were built in the US of A.
“In just a few decades, the expansion of free trade and growth in U.S. operations has transformed Honda from importing 100 percent of the cars sold in the U.S. to establishing the U.S. as an export and production hub,” said Rick Schostek, senior vice president of Honda North America.
The car company also brags that last year, it was the only one to have thee nameplates with over 300,000 sales.
