Oh dear. Will the Takata airbag scandal ever cool off? As it is the case right now, not for a while. After recalling roughly 33.8 million cars affected by faulty inflators, Honda drops by to announce that approximately 1.39 million inflators will be added to the recall, inflators fitted to old-gen Civic models.
The Japanese manufacturer’s Stateside arm tells that it will initiate a national recall. As it happens, the passenger front airbags designed and assembled by Takata are the defect that riddles certain 2001 - 2005 MY Civic and 2003 - 2007 MY Accord models.
Honda informs that this campaign is a response to Takata’s horror announcement from May 28th. Honda’s new recall adds 1.39 million front passenger-side airbag inflators not previously subject to a recall campaign. According to the Takata defect determination and the NHTSA's directive, Honda decided to conduct this recall on top of the 350,000 airbag inflators mentioned in the preliminary announcement.
Some 915,000 of the affected Civic and Accord vehicles included in existing passenger front airbag inflator recalls and Honda's voluntary safety improvement campaigns will transition into the most recently announced recall. The same free replacement of the passenger front airbag inflator will be completed under the new national action. Simple arithmetics brings the grand total up to just shy of 2.3 million passenger front airbag inflators now requiring replacement in this action.
If you thought that Honda is in a bit of a pinch, you’re right. On the other hand, Chrysler goes through a bigger Takata airbag-related problem. The American manufacturer has to replace airbags that equip a whopping 5,224,845 vehicles, from the 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck to the 2011 Dodge Dakota.
