The new units are expected to give both riders a boost in performance at the twisty circuit in Sachsenring, considering the old engine powered Dani Pedrosa's prototype to its first win this season, at Laguna Seca, less than 2 weekends ago. The newly improved engine, theoretically at least, will only add to the success of the initial 2009 engine.
Honda choose to debut their new engine in Germany as it is more suited to slow speeded, twisty and more technical tracks. According to Pedrosa, the new engine works better at low gears, which is how all riders will choose to run their bikes this weekend because of the circuit's characteristics.
“The new engine is to improve power delivery because our engine is always very ‘peaky’ and we have lot of spinning in the lower gears, so we are trying to avoid this and trying to get better drive out of corners,” said Pedrosa during Thursday's press conference, as reported by the series' official site.
“Honda have brought a new engine, so I am excited to try it, especially at this track because it is very slow and the new engine should be better in terms of its character. I am confident about it,” added Dovizioso, who has conducted most of the offseason testing for Honda this year.
The Italian will try to score his first points in the last 3 races on Sunday, as he recorded back-to-back crashes in the US GP and Dutch GP.
