Honda Civic Type-R Wagon Is Weird and Awesome at the Same Time

Let's forgo any sense of logic for a moment and suggest that what the average European family man wants is this Honda Civic Tourer Type-R, a wagon with too much power and the first VTEC Turbo engine.

Wouldn't it be something if kids learned about ground effects and drag fuel injection instead of playing Candy Crush all day? Weekends at Brands Hatch and Castle Combe, setting school run records and so on, and so forth.

Honda's impressive Civic Type R hot hatch was only recently unveiled and isn't yet available for mass consumption. It's just one of many products that Honda hopes will revive its European sales.

But engineering a hot version of the wagon would not only be easy, it would also be a great idea. To save money, the company designers used the same trunk hatch and rear doors on both the regular model and the wagon. With only a few body panels differentiating the two, the Type-R wagon would be a quick build.

The segment already exists, though it is not well defined. Volkswagen's 300 horsepower Golf R Variant is the fastest super-wagon, followed closely by SEAT's 280 hp Leon Cupra ST. Below that, we find Ford's Focus ST and a bunch of less powerful cars, such as the Golf GTD Variant and Peugeot 308 GT.

In theory, Honda could still offer something none of them have: aggression. The body kit that you see in this rendering by X-Tomi has that "butch" look all the other companies are afraid to offer. The suspension and drivetrain are also honed at the Nurburgring.

We have to ask ourselves if anybody wants to pay over €40,000 for a family wagon with a stiff suspension? We've seen people driving buses and vans at the Nurburgring, so yes, they would. But it may already be too late, since development of the next-gen Civic is already underway, so money isn't going to be invested in this older model.

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
