Honestly, the rumors surrounding the next Civic Type R are so wildly varied, that it almost seems Honda themselves don’t know what it will be like. Two generations ago, the Civic Type R was a brilliant little car, but the one after that which we just put behind us was underpowered, heavy and pompous to name but a few of its faults.
And it seemed they would repeat their mistake again, as early reports suggested the brand new Civic hatch would be transformed into a sort of Golf GTI rival, not a track car. Fortunately, the project’s wheels seem to be turning in the right direction this time, as British magazine AutoExpress has learned it could have as much as 300 horsepower coming from a 2-liter turbo engine.
According to Yasuhisa Arai from Honda’s R&D centre, this power is necessary to ensure the Civic is capable of topping the Renault Megane 265 Trophy, currently the fastest production FWD car round the Nurburgring.
Honda is also working on a track focused suspension setup like those used by Ford, Opel or Renault, which would minimize the effects of torque steer. The Civic Type R will also have a limited slip differential and maybe even rear-wheel steering.
