Breaking records for fuel efficiency may not be something out of the ordinary considering that mankind evolved into a thrill-seeking species. Today’s story features a Honda Civic diesel and two employees of the Japanese brand. Believe it or not, these guys broke the lowest fuel consumption record with a C-segment wagon powered by a 1.6L diesel.
Honda Europe’s Fergal McGrath and Julian Warren are the heroes that averaged 100.31 UK mpg (83.5 US mpg or 2.81 l/100 km) over 8,387 miles (13,497 kilometers), in a 25-day drive across all 24 EU contiguous countries. For this boring but daring and highly technical feat, the Honda Civic Tourer 1.6 i-DTEC they’ve used for the entire journey is now the holder of the Guinness World Records title for fuel efficiency.
More specifically, the peeps from Guinness refer to this title as the record for "lowest fuel consumption – all 24 contiguous EU countries (all cars).” Under the rules of Guinness, the C-segment estate car is standard specification in every respect.
Every technicality, from the tire pressure to the wheel alignment and diesel fuel used to refuel the Civic Tourer, mirror real-world conditions. The only non-standard bits and bobs are represented by the fuel/mileage logbook and GPS devices employed to track the team’s average fuel economy.
The boys set off from Aalst, Belgium, on June 1st, returning to the start point on June 25th. Compared to the Tourer 1.6 i-DTEC’s official average fuel economy of 74.3 UK mpg, the record-breaking attempt saw the quoted figure increase by approximately 25 percent. That’s an incredible average of 932 miles (1,500 km) on each tank of fuel, at a total fuel cost for the journey of just £459 ($715 at current exchange rates).
“It was tough, be we really enjoyed it,” declared Mr. Fergal McGrath. “This was a huge team effort so I’d like to thank everyone involved for all their commitment and support.”
