Honda Brings Launch Control to UTVs in the 2021 Talon 1000X-4

These awesome vehicles can take the same punishment that dirt bikes or ATVs endure while providing a comfort level those cannot match. Honda has a long history of building incredible all-terrain machines and all that experience translates into one of the most capable side-by-sides out there, the Talon 1000X-4.

It is designed to deliver a thrilling experience that can be shared with three additional passengers without sacrificing performance or comfort. Built on a high-performance long-wheelbase chassis, the Talon provides superior handling and stability compared to other four-seat UTVs. It features an independent suspension system with a three-link trailing arm layout on the rear to provide long travel and generous ground clearance.

Depending on the chosen trim, it uses FOX Podium 2.0 shocks in the front and 2.5 shocks in the rear, with QS3 quick adjusters on all four sides, or FOX’s Live Valve system that features 2.5 adaptive shocks for all four wheels.

This high-tech system adjusts damping on each shock absorber electronically up to 16 times per second, which translates into less pitch and roll over difficult terrain, providing a superior riding experience.

Customers who choose the Talon 1000X-4 FOX Live Valve version are also treated to the most fun feature of any side-by-side, the Launch Mode button. Since it’s the only UTV with this function, owners will have the upper hand in any race.

It works by holding down the brake and the paddle shifters and pressing the Launch Mode button. When the rider floors the gas and releases the paddles, all hell will break loose as instant acceleration occurs.

All that raw power is delivered by a longitudinally-mounted 999-cc liquid-cooled, parallel-twin, four-stroke engine. Managed by Honda’s advanced PGM-FI engine-mapping system, it delivers around 105 horsepower and it uses the same proven Unicam cylinder head design found in the proven CRF450R dirt bike.

The Talon also uses a six-speed automatic dual-clutch transmission that can be operated manually via the steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. There are also two additional shift modes, standard, and sport that enable the DCT to control shifting automatically.

Two drive modes are available: standard 2WD, where power is only delivered to the rear wheels, and Honda’s second-generation i-4WD system specifically tuned for the quick response required by such vehicles.

It is the first system to bring brake-traction control to the world of side-by-sides simplifying operation and increasing traction by offering the same benefits as a locked front differential with none of the drawbacks.

For increased safety, the 1000X-4’s Occupant Protection Structure utilizes large-diameter tubing and meets ROHVA’s rollover protection standard. It also features standard-equipment hard doors, three-point seatbelts, and quick-clip side nets.

Being a four-seater, it brings stadium seating for the rear passengers. They sit almost 3 inches (7.6 cm) higher and 2 inches (2 cm) closer to each other, giving occupants a much better field of view.

The 2021 Talon is also available in shorter wheelbase, two-seater versions that use the same components as the four-seater. It even comes with Launch Mode for this model year on the FOX Live Valve trim.

Customers also have a wide range of factory accessories and upgrades to choose from, including windscreens, wider bumpers, cargo bags, or fabric upper doors.

This amazing sport side-by-side is said to satisfy even the most hardcore thrill seekers but all that comes at a cost; it is available in dealerships with base prices starting at $21,999.

The FOX Live Valve four-seater is a bit more expensive at $23,999, but the active dampers and launch control function are well worth the extra $2,000.
