Honda Begins Sale of ‘Honda Safety Navi’ Software

‘Honda Safety Navi’, a new educational software for safe driving is now available for purchase in Japan. The software was developed by Honda Motor Co, for a PC-based automobile driving simulator.

Every manufacturer is focused on how to develop the best technology in safety or eco-driving, but until now none of them have thought of teaching drivers how to behave behind the wheel. ‘Honda Safety Navi’ was developed to enable its users to learn safe driving by following the on-screen and audio instructions.

This educational software contains two programmes, ‘Eco Drive’ and ‘SD Coacher’. The first one allows users to understand fuel-efficient driving techniques and also to learn the key points of eco-driving. It measures the level of eco-driving and diagnoses the user’s level based on graphs which show his acceleration and fuel-efficiency patterns. The programme then provides instructions to improve the driver's behavior.

The SD Coacher teaches the user basic driving skills. The good thing is that at the same he/she takes a quiz about traffic laws and regulations. When learning how to drive on a regular road course, users are familiarized with the risks related to the most common accidents on regular urban roads. The Highway course makes easier for the user to understand key safety points when entering the highway or changing lanes. Safe driving during snow, rain and night driving were also included in the programme.

As you might have guessed, prices are not low. The software can be purchased alone, for $2,200 (210,000 yen) or bundled with the recommended hardware (such as a steering wheel, speaker, foot pedals, PC and monitor), for the price of $3,150 (298,000 yen).

Don't think that by these prices Honda is targeting the retail market. The company aims to spread the software to a wide range of customers, such as automobile dealers, driving schools or even companies whose employees use automobiles for commuting or business purposes.
