Holden Astra VXR Attacks an Obstacle Course Made of Drones

Presenting itself as a global network dedicated to creativity, arts, and technology, The Creators Project was founded in 2009 with the backing of Intel. After six years, more than 600 Creators, and participating artists like Daft Punk and David Bowie, The Creators Project’s latest work brings together a Holden Astra VXR and drones.

Directed by GMUNK (aka Bradley G. Munkowitz), the Car vs Drones is an artistic confrontation between an Aussie-spec Holden Astra VXR and a swarm of custom drones. Slated to start airing on Australian TV this very week, the adjacent clip represents Holden’s partnership with The Creators Project and VICE’s in-house creative agency Virtue. What came of it is, by us, a genuinely excellent piece of automotive artistry.

Despite my appreciation for The Creators Project after I’ve seen Metronomy’s music video for I’m Aquarius, I have to hand it to Rohan Rebeiro for the thrilling music used in the Car vs Drones commercial. The dramatic soundtrack goes hand in hand with the Carbon Flash Black paint job of the Aussie hot hatchback and the rather darkened warehouse.

But custom-made drones flying in synchronized formation to create a moving racetrack is something out of the ordinary. Vector in the various techniques of light manipulation used to exercise an artistic feeling more than a commercial one, and you’re in for quite a wild ride. Considering that GMUNK worked on the set of Tron: Legacy, you should get excited.

Described as simply as “a beautiful dance of light, form, colour, performance and technology,” by GMUNK, the following video is more than that. If you enjoyed the watch, we’ve also added a making of video to find out how they filmed and edited this super cool car ad.
