The NHTSA issued a new recall campaign for certain Öhlins steering dampers. The problem was detected before (Öhlins Racing AB recall in July, 2013) with the units which equipped BMW’s S1000RR and R1200R machinery, but it appears like more machinery has faced the issue.
Just like the last mid-summer recall, this new one (campaign number 14E012000) targets an incorrectly machined bracket. This bracket may crack in certain conditions, and it could cause the steering to lock. This in turn, could lead to personal injuries and crashes, with potentially serious injuries as a result of losing directional control of the bike.
These steering damper kits have been sold as aftermarket upgrades for Yamaha R1, R6, and FZ6, Suzuki TL1000R and GSX1300R Hayabusa, Honda CB600RR, and Ducati Monster 1000, 748, 848, 916, 996, and 998 motorcycles. At the same time, similar kits for other motorcycle models have been sold as universal-fit units, and they have part numbers SD 000 through SD 005.
Öhlins is notifying registered customers and will provide them with a new bracket, but no notification schedule for this recall has been officially mentioned.
