Hickory Outlook Is Perhaps the Most Elegant DIY Tiny House You’ve Seen

Just because it’s tiny doesn’t mean a tiny home has to lack creature comforts, amenities, luxury features or, for that matter, be cheap. Or feel tiny.

Hickory Outlook is a tiny house, or better said, it is described as one by its builder and owner, Emily. It is only a tiny house because it’s downsized, so it is quite literally a tiny house, but it doesn’t sit on a trailer and can’t be moved by towing. The Hickory Outlook is a good example of alternative living, of thinking outside the proverbial box, while drawing inspiration on a very popular trend.

It is also quite possibly the most elegant tiny home you’ve seen, at least recently. Amenities include anything from custom furniture to a fancy and very modern bathroom, a sauna and a hot tub, a firepit, and a stylish, modern interior. Hickory Outlook is a tiny home of the kind other tiny homes dream of becoming when they grow up, lack of movability aside.

Emily hopes it serves as inspiration for other builds, to further the conversation on alternative living and shatter some myths about downsized living and, perhaps just as importantly, help her with her business. She’s into flipping homes, and this is her second build, which she’s offering on Airbnb in upstate New York. On social media – on TikTok, in particular – she is using it to answer questions about such builds, including costs, materials, and whether one is more convenient than a brick-and-mortar home. The videos below show both her projects so far, with the second one showing a converted shipping container called Scenic Orchard.

For starters, Emily is adamant that those who believe a tiny DIY home is cheaper than a regular home are wrong. This project, which offers 456 square feet (42.3 square meters) of interior space and, to her, qualifies as a “tiny home,” cost over $200,000, and that doesn’t even include the land it sits on. Emily says the land is her family’s property, so it helped cut down the total cost of the build.

Then, the materials used are premium, which is reflected in the final cost. The separate sauna wooden building was $7,000, the hot tub on the heated patio was $5,000, while the subway tile in the bathroom was “a couple of grand” on its own. When you build for short-term rental, which is what she did, you can’t skimp out on materials. The same goes for the appliances and the furniture, she says.

The Hickory Outlook is designed as a two-person temporary residence, though if you could replicate it, it would serve as a permanent home just as well. Entrance is done through the side door, along a hallway that gives way to the bathroom on the right.

It’s generous in size and comparable to a luxurious hotel ensuite, with dual vanity, custom-painted cabinetry (because Emily loves a certain shade of paint on the 1990 Chevrolet Tahoe, and she wanted it here), walk-in shower with body nozzles, and an electric toilet that incorporates a bidet. Just to give you an idea of how large the bathroom is, know that it also integrates a small laundry section, with a washer and drier stacked one on top of the other.

The tiny home has heated floors throughout, including on the patio, and features a combination of Brazilian hardwood piping and stone tiles. The open-plan kitchen is small but complete, with anything from a four-burner oven to a coffee machine, and a breakfast bar that can sit the two guests.

A large leather couch stands in for the lounge area, with direct views outside, through oversize windows that open almost all the way up. The bedroom is at that the other end of the home, and includes floating nightstands with wireless charging, a small wardrobe, and a desk for remote work. The desk has light-adjustable mirrors, so it can double as a small makeup station. If you’re the kind who gets dolled up for hikes.

“Tiny House. Big Vibes,” Emily writes in the description of this home. That it’s tiny is definitely debatable, but it definitely gives off big – and very luxurious – vibes.

*Update September 16, 2022: The text has been edited to remove all mentions of this being a shipping container home, which it is not. The Hickory Outlook is a non-movable DIY premium tiny home.
