The London Luton Airport and airline company easyJet are also getting into the Christmas spirit. This year, though, they felt as doing a lighting ceremony for a tree would be too little for their joint staff, so they came up with a better, more impressive idea.
They’re boasting of having put together the world’s biggest Christmas light show on a plane, The Independent notes. This is a big deal for the airport, which has been voted Britain’s least favorite for the third consecutive year and is now in the process of being redesigned.
Ground staff at the airport spent 24 hours decorating the hangar housing the plane, an easyJet A320 Airbus. They used 1.5 miles of multi-colored lights and 850,000 choreographed light sequences. For the plane, a team of 10 special effects artists and lighting designers was brought in, and they worked for 4 weeks to come up with the stunning light show.
The light show was synchronized to a remix of Tchaikovsky’s Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Members of the audience included children from two local schools and families of Luton and easyJet staff. You can see a snippet of the show and the audience reactions in the video at the bottom of the page, which, conveniently, works as a Christmas promo for both companies.
“As we reach the end of our redevelopment – the largest in the airports 80-year history – we wanted to extend a huge thank you to staff and customers and give them a special Christmas gift,” Operations director of London Luton Airport, Neil Thompson, says in a statement.
Tina Milton, director of cabin services at easyJet, notes that staff were thrilled to be involved in the decorating process, so this was like a present to them from start to finish.
No details yet on how much the light show set the two companies back, but we’re guessing it wasn’t cheap.
