You know how it goes these days; if you want to promote something, you better associate it with fashion. Lexus did it, Toyota did it and now it’s Hyundai’s turn as students of London College of Fashion (LCF) collaborated with the automaker in order to raise some attention on the all-new ix35 Fuel Cell.
In fact, the whole “Fashioned Fuel Cell” project was a contest between the art students, tasking them with creating a “Mobile Marketing Campaign” to preach the benefits of Hyundai’s zero emission ix35 Fuel Cell.

Over 150 2D entries have been submitted, but only 10 got selected to be applied to the batch of Hyundai fuel cells that will be used to chauffeur VIPs around London during the LCF’s BA15 undergraduate season.

The overall winning design award went to 1st year Fashion Design and Realization student Ilona Spruge, her design being the best one to fit in the fuel cell theme by using some rather interesting graphics, depicting a combination of nature and chemistry motifs.

“I am absolutely delighted that my design has been chosen as the overall winner. I’m really excited that my work will be showcased in such a high-impact way by being driven around London chauffeuring VIP guests to LCF’s shows” said Ilona. “My inspiration for the campaign came from this simple truth: ‘The car with a green agenda close to its heart’, and I felt empowered by Hyundai to create a design synonymous with a sustainable future.”

Apart from having her artwork applied to the ix35 and showcased throughout the whole city, Ilona will also be resented with an award by Hyundai UK’s president and CEO Tony Whitehorn, at an awards presentation in Shoreditch on June 25th.

What? You thought Toyota is the first automaker to fit fuel cells into a production car? Well, Hyundai showed an increasing interest in the technology since 2000 when it introduced the Santa Fe FCEV. In 2013, the automaker became the world’s first manufacturer to begin assembly-line production of zero-emission, hydrogen-powered cars.

The Hyundai ix35 can go up to 370 miles (595 km) on a single tank of hydrogen, which can then be refilled in a few minutes. The system has an output of 100 kW and the car can go from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 12.5 seconds.
