If you’re a filmmaker, you mix up the work of a great Hollywood director and put it on Vimeo. If you’re a painter, you start creating controversial street art. If you’re a singer, you tape yourself and upload the song on YouTube. But what do you do if you’re an industrial designer that wants to get proper acknowledgment? You make a boat concept inspired by a famous car.
That’s one of those things people do today; they use their talent and combine it with something great created in the past and make what they call “a concept”. I generally associate this custom with the classic music cover. Nevertheless, the discussion on whether or not that’s the proper way to obtain awareness is a different subject.

The reason we are talking about a concept boat is that its creator claims it was somehow inspired by the beautiful classic Bugatti Type 57. We are talking about a genuine work of automotive art created by Ettore’s son himself, back in the late 1930s.

The car model used a twin-cam 3,257 cc engine based on that of the Type 49 but heavily modified by Jean Bugatti. With only 710 produced, most of them were melted by the Third Reich to make their implements of war.

The point is that when you choose such a rare breed as your inspiration, petrolheads with a particular taste for old-school autos will expect you to be careful. UK-based designer Fraser Leid claims his Bugatti Atlantean Racing Yacht is a concept that pays homage to the classic automobile, but we can’t quite figure how that works.

“Incorporating features that gave the vehicle an iconic stance in the automotive industry, its form blends streamlined design from the 1930s with modernized aerodynamics,” the designer details his creation. We don’t see much of the Bugatti Type 57 revived in his concept boat, but maybe you guys think different.
