Here’s How the BMW M2 Sounds Like, in a Sneak Preview

When the current M3 and M4 models came out, with their new 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engines, most people declared they were disappointed in how they sounded. Most, however, forgot that they were comparing the old V8 with a whole different configuration, hence the disappointment.
We drove the M4 on a number of occasions, though, and if you get your mind straight and understand that this is an inline-6 engine, you'll realize that the sound it makes is more than decent. The question is: will the M2 be the same?

Well, the architecture under the hood is the same, the displacement is nearly the same and even some of the components have been shared between the power plants of the M2 and the one of the M4 for example. Therefore, the results should be similar, right?

We found a first video of the car filmed at the Auto Bild HQ and while the presenter, Robin Hornig, does an excellent job of presenting the M2’s specs and special features, we would’ve been more interested in how the car sounds like.

Admittedly, they did film its exhaust too for a couple of seconds but to us it definitely wasn’t enough. Even so, we got to hear it a little and, truth be told, we figure it sounds better than the M4.

Of course, the people over at BMW tried to keep the M2 as tame as possible, not to step on M4 territory and that’s blatant everywhere you look, from the lack of a carbon fiber roof to the usage of standard seats inside, but even so, to a variety of people the M2 will make more sense.

It’s also cheaper and nearly as fast, depending on the gearbox choice, but to us it’s the sound that puts the M2 ahead of the M4.
