Sometimes having money is not enough to get what you want, at least not as fast as you’d like, anyway. This is definitely how things went on with BMW’s super popular newborn, a plug-in hybrid sportscar longly awaited and highly appreciated in the industry. Since only 1,741 units reached the market globally, it was rather a thing of chance for ice hockey right winger Scottie Upshall to get his own BMW i8.
In case you’re not a big hockey fan, we’ll remind you Scottie is a right winger and an alternate captain for the Florida Panthers. He signed a four-year contract worth $14 million with the team back in July, 2011. He’s also a great BMW fan, in fact it would seem the i8 he recently got is not the only rare breed the sportsman owns.

The guys over at the AutoNation Drive got the chance to talk with him about his eager to get the new hybrid sportscar and it would seem it goes way back. According to the source, Upshall already owned a rare BMW model, the Alpina B7, which we all know it’s a high-performance version of the flagship 7 Series sedan. This was his daily drive up until the i8 joined the family, but it would seem most of the cars the hockey star owned came from the same brand.

Even though the car was initially assigned to somebody else, it’s previous buyer has changed his mind thus freeing the path for Upshall to get his hands on the car: “I immediately agreed to buy the car and we got the process rolling with a store in California and I didn’t even ask what the price was!”

A hybrid creature that develops 357 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of combined power, the eco-friendly beauty is not only a head-turner but a true masterpiece. Due to its carbon fiber construction, the i8 is by far a low weight vehicle and its design allows for a low drag coefficient. In all-electric mode the BMW i8 has a top speed of 120 km/h (75 mph). In Sport mode BMW’s futuristic runner delivers a mid-range acceleration from 80 to 120 km/h (50 to 75 mph) in 2.6 seconds. The electronically controlled top speed is 250 km/h (160 mph).

That is just a short list of what this car stands for and we’re pretty sure you know all about it, but it felt like that was the least we could say.
