Today we were reporting that growing crops to create biofuel won’t cut it for the future of transportation as it will increase food pricing and lead to deforestation. However, biofuels can be obtain from other sources, like algae and here you’ll see how it’s being done.
The advantages of creating biofuel from algae is that it comes off relatively cheap, can be made almost anywhere and even the secondary product left after the process is still green and can be used in other applications.
As presented by the Science Channel in the video bellow, all you need at first is a small colony of algae and enough containers to multiply them. And we’ll tell you that by multiplying, the process refers to several pools filled with the stuff.
Once the small colony grown in a Petri dish is mature enough, they get moved in a bigger jar. The process is repeated as they reproduce and need bigger and bigger containers, up to the point you’ll fill a swimming pool.
Then you need to collect the algae mass and let it dry. The water will evaporate and the oil they contain can be squished out using a press. That oil has almost the same properties as petroleum products and can be used as fuel without modifying you engine, while the resulting mass can be used to feed different animals.
The only problem now is that the process takes a bit too long and a bit too many containers in order to achieve enough biofuel for a full tank, but the scientists are working their way to make the process more efficient so anyone could brew their own biofuel at home.
