Soon after the official presentation of its first electric car, the Taycan, Porsche decided to take the production model out for a spin on public roads. The vehicle was presented simultaneously on three continents on Wednesday, and the Taycan shown in North America quickly took off from Niagara Falls heading for New York.
The 408 miles distance is a bit over the car’s range capabilities, rated at 256 miles, meaning some recharging en route had to be made. But the drive was the perfect opportunity for the Germans to show off their new star car in front of potential customers.

The Taycan stopped to recharge at an Electrify America charging station located at Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, about halfway to New York. It spent 24 minutes there, during which time the car’s battery levels soared from 14 to 85 percent. It then set off for its destination.

“It’s fantastic to see the Taycan take to the road in its final form for the first time, and to demonstrate its ability to cover big miles in complete comfort,” said in a statement Stefan Weckbach, product line VP for the Taycan.

“At the moment, this is the one and only Taycan undisguised and on the road in the US. I can’t wait for it to reach customer’s hands and for many more to hit the roads around the world.”

Deliveries of the Taycan will begin in December 2019 in two versions, Turbo and Turbo S. Both pack two electric motors that develop 625 ps (680 and 761 ps respectively, are possible with launch control ). The range for the Turbo is 279 miles, and the S stops at 256 miles.

Later during the car’s production cycle, more Taycan variants will join the lineup, starting with the Cross Turismo by the end of this year.

Porsche sells the entry-level for $150,900, while the top of the range is priced at $185,000.
