HERE has just announced that it managed to create high-fidelity 3D models of no fewer than 75 city centers across the world, and they are available now for the industry via its HERE Premier 3D Cities program.
The new 3D models have been specifically created to provide a high level of detail, so they accurately reproduce not only the physical location but also the volume size, the elevation, and the façade color of each structure.

The HERE 3D city models are already installed on the MIB2+ infotainment system on the Audi A8, and more carmakers are likely to adopt the system on their vehicles.

However, the navigation industry isn’t the only one to benefit from these 3D city models, as HERE says it can also help urban planning and government operations, filmmaking, AR and VR applications, and even videogame development whenever an accurate 3D version of a location is required.

With HERE Premier 3D Cities, last-mile delivery drivers can navigate dense cities with maps that highlight precise building dimensions and entry points along their delivery routes. The entertainment industry gets the building blocks for virtual site visits and seamless computer-generated imagery integration. Telecommunications companies can optimize their buildouts of 5G networks in 3D and urban planners and emergency responders can build digital twins for better land use analysis and disaster readiness simulations,” the company explains in a press release (embedded below).

Needles to say, the creation of these 3D city models didn’t just happen overnight, and HERE says it used a full arsenal of new-gen tech to make it happen. LiDAR, optical, and satellite imagery helped build them, and the company says it’s working day and night to map a bigger part of the world.

For the sake of statistics, HERE says it captures more than 27 terabytes of terrestrial LiDAR data every day, as it has already mapped 196 countries and continues to expand to more regions.
