Even though the Bronco isn’t out of the bag, Hennessey Performance Engineering already announced a handful of upgrades for the mid-size SUV with the body-on-frame architecture from the 2019 Ford Ranger. “A line of high-performance and extreme off-road upgrades” are in the pipeline, starting with a “high-flow air induction system” and “intercooler system.”
An intercooler has applications in forced induction, which leads us to believe the rumors regarding the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 are true. As a brief refresher, word has it the Bronco will use the same engine as the Edge ST. If it’s numbers you’re most interested in, look forward to 335 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque from the twin-turbocharged V6.
The Texas-based tuner also promises a “stainless steel exhaust, larger off-road tires and wheels, suspension kit, and so much more.” Provided that Ford doesn’t take inspiration from the roof options that Jeep offers on the Wrangler, such an upgrade should be taken into consideration by Hennessey Performance Engineering and other aftermarket outfits willing to work their magic on the Bronco.
Last time we’ve heard anything about the Bronco, the lowdown is that Ford is supposed to launch the mid-size SUV during the calendar year 2020. This could translate to the 2021 model year, which goes to show that Ford has other priorities at this point. More specifically, the 2020 Explorer and 2020 F-150 will arrive in dealer showrooms ahead of the Bronco.
It’s possible the Bronco could offer a manual transmission option, coming in the guise of the 7MTI550 from Getrag. This stick shift with seven forward ratios is good for up to 550 Nm or 406 pound-feet, which is more than the 2.7-liter EcoBoost has to offer in the Edge ST.
Built through five generations from 1965 to 1996, the Bronco was replaced by the Expedition full-size SUV as a response to the Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, and Yukon XL. The sixth generation will be produced in Wayne, Michigan in the same assembly plant where the Ranger is manufactured.
