Hennessey Sets New Speed Record, Claims Venom GT Faster Than Bugatti Veyron

For some years now, most of John Hennessey's efforts have gone towards conceiving a supercar that could beat the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport in terms of top speed. And it looks like Hennessey Performance Engineering has finally succeded.

The Houston-based tuning specialist claims its Lotus Elise-based Venom GT is now the world's fastest production vehicle after hitting a top speed of 265.7 mph (427.6 km/h) during a run that took place on February 9 at the United States Naval Air Station.

Since the Bugatti Veyron SS has reached 267.8 mph (430.9 km/h), Hennessey's claim doesn't look accurate at first glance, but the Texans rightly points out that Mulhouse sells its vehicles with a top speed limited to 258 mph (415.2 km/h).

"While a Veyron Super Sport did run 267.8 mph, Bugatti speed-limits its production vehicles to 258 mph," said John Hennessey. "Thus, at 265.7 mph the Venom GT is the fastest production car available to the public". We wouldn't argue someone who turned a Lotus Elise in an utterly fast machine…

So, planning to trade your Veyron for a Venom GT? One thing's for sure. The US-built vehicle will be built in only 29 examples price at $1.2 million (€940,000). The 1,244 hp and 1,155 lb-ft of torque come from a GM-sourced twin-turbo 7.0-liter LS9 V8.
