The "Hemi Under Glass Collection", which consists of four 1967 Plymouth Barracuda Hurst Hemi Under Glass wheel-standers will go under the hammer this fall at a Mecum Auctions event hosted by Chicago's Schaumburg Convention Center.
More than 1,000 vehicles will be auctioned off from October 10 through October 12, but the outstanding "Hemi Under Glass Collection" is set to become one of the event's main attractions, with all four 1967 Plymouths up for grabs.
Built as exhibition drag racing cars by Hurst Performance in 1967, these Plymouth Barracudas are powered by fuel injected Chrysler Hemi engines placed under the rear window. The purpose of the uncommon configuration was to allow the vehicle to do long wheel-stands are speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.
Hurst Performance built the first "Hemi Under Glass" in 1965, with help from exhibition racer "Wild" Bill Shrewsberry, and campaigned several models until 1975.
The four 1967 Barracudas will be auctioned off as one lot.
