Heidfeld Might Return to Williams in 2010

Formula One veteran Nick Heidfeld is very close to signing a deal with Williams F1 Team. Although BMW Sauber managed to safeguard the future of the team from 2010 onwards, the German driver doesn't want to stick around and start from scratch all over again with basically a new outfit.

His return to Williams – for which he used to drive back in 2005, when the team used BMW engines – was hinted by the team's technical director Sam Michael, who argued that Heidfeld proved himself against Robert Kubica in recent years. Despite his age – Nick turned 32 this year – Michael insisted Heidfeld is anything but a done driver.

Against Kubica, Nick looks very good. To say that his career is over would be ridiculous,” said Michael, who admitted that the Grove based team will be looking for a more experienced driver for their 2010 lineup to partner the current GP2 champion Nico Hulkenberg.

Today there are many advantages to having experienced drivers, because as everyone knows there is no testing. Taking on a rookie is a risk, without a doubt,” added the Australian official.

With Nico Rosberg already one step at Brawn GP for the upcoming season and Kazuki Nakajima likely to leave the outfit because of his poor results this year, Frank Williams has plenty of drivers to choose from for the 2010 lineup. Heikki Kovalainen, Rubens Barrichello and Timo Glock are some other drivers likely to look for a new commitment in 2010.

Also, Michael admitted that his team is yet to make a decision on their future engine supplier, Renault and Mercedes being the main options from 2010 onwards.
