Heidfeld: "Getting Rid of Me Wouldn't Make Sense"

German driver Nick Heidfeld hit back at rumors that BMW Sauber will not extend his deal at the end of the season. Heidfled's contract with the Hinwil based team runs out at the end of 2009, and the team is yet to announce its future plans for the 2010 lineup. As reported by German tabloid Bild ahead of last weekend's Monaco Grand Prix, Heidfeld will be left searching for a race spot in 2010.

When asked about that possibility, Heidfeld denied it, while also arguing that he'd given no reason to his team not to renew his contract. The German has so far scored team's only podium this season – during the rainy black-flagged Malaysian Grand Prix – while also scoring all of the team's points in 2009.

I don't know why they would get rid of a driver who has scored six out of the six points,” argued Heidfeld.

BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen also dismissed the rumors, making it very clear that his drivers are not to blame for his team's poor run this season. He insisted the car is the one that needs fixing, and not the drivers' lineup.

I hadn't read that, and if I had, I would not comment on it. I could only say bad things about our drivers if our car was faster,” said Theissen, who also said that his team is not used to discuss the lineup for the upcoming year until further into the current season.

Anyway we usually only think about the lineup for the next year in September,” added the BMW official.

Team's other driver Robert Kubica is also (reportedly) in his final year with BMW Sauber. Although heavily linked with a move to Ferrari, his team did not comment on a potential extension for the Pole driver either.
