Heidfeld Denies Speculation on Replacing Kubica

Nick Heidfeld was recently hinted to be in contention for replacing Robert Kubica at Lotus Renault through the 2011 F1 season. And it wasn't all just a rumor that spread in the media in no time, but the result of Vitaly Petrov's comments earlier today.

While visiting his teammate in the hospital, Petrov told the media that there are currently 3 drivers considered for the Renault vacancy, namely current reserve Bruno Senna, German veteran Nick Heidfeld and former Force India driver Vitantonio Liuzzi. The Italian actually expressed his willingness to take the seat, in case he will be offered a deal.

However, without ruling himself out of contention for the season, Heidfeld refused to confirm the latest rumors through manager Andre Theuerzeit.

With respect for Robert, we believe it is currently not appropriate to speculate,” said Theuerzeit, according to the German news agency SID.

Needless to say, most of you know by now that Heidfeld and Kubica used to be teammates for BMW Sauber between 2006 and 2009. While the Pole signed a deal with Renault at the end of the 2009 campaign, Heidfeld went on to become a tester for Mercedes GP, before signing a Pirelli test deal and eventually returning to F1 with BMW Sauber Ferrari in the late stages of last season.

In terms of experience, Heidfeld would definitely hold the upper hand over his “rivals” for the job, as he started 172 F1 Grands Prix since his debut with Prost Grand Prix, back in 2000.
