With the current Formula One season well underway, Mercedes AMG Petronas is busy developing their new turbocharged V6 units that will power the modern Silver Arrows starting with the 2014 season.
Designed to replace the current normally aspirated V8 mill, the new 1.6-liter power unit uses a single turbocharger that can spin at speeds of up to 125,000 rpm. And it’s noisy too, as the video uploaded today by Mercedes AMG Petronas demonstrates below.
To showcase the new unit, Mercedes AMG synced the sound sourced from a development engine to a lap of the famed Monza track using the team’s simulator. The result is said to offer “the most accurate impression of how the new Power Units will sound in 2014”, but we find it rather disappointing.
Probably because when we learned about FIA’s regulations for the 2014 season we sincerely thought that the awesome sounds that spirited the F1 tracks in the 1980s were set to return. We were obviously wrong... But you don’t have to take our word for it and you don’t have to agree with us. Just scroll below to hear the buzz.
