Headway is a new audio solution for those who enjoy listening to music while practicing their fav sports which require wearing a helmet. While most of you are already thinking about headphones and internal helmets speakers, Headway is using a different, more comfortable and convenient principle.
First of all one of the coolest things about the Headway device is its universality. It can be retrofitted to pretty much any helmet with a solid shell, and this expands usability thousandfold, as motorcycle riders, snowboarders, skateboarders and so on, will now be able to use it.
Headway uses vibrations generated by the add-on device. As you stream music via Bluetooth from your smartphone or BT-enabled portable MP3 player, Headway vibrates and thanks to the transducing properties of the helmet's shell, transforming it into a resonating body. And you'll hear the music.
Now, using material resonance for conveying acoustic signals is not new, with speakerless music sources such as the Terfenol-D or the Feonic Soundbug being around for quite some time now. Funny that only now someone though of blending it with the helmet technology!
The project is up for crowdfunding and if all works out well, we could see it surface in Q4, for an expected price around €270 ($366).
However, don't expect the Headway to sound like your hi-fi Sennheiser headphones, because it simply can't. Helmets are meant to protect the "pudding" and not play music. Cool idea, anyway!
