Haven Shadow Vessel Is a Millionaire’s Buffer From the Outside World

Even under the most optimistic scenario, the international health crisis will probably continue well through late 2021, with certain precautions necessary far off into the future.

For the millionaires of the world still planning on cruising around the world, the thought of having to dock for supplies or maintenance work, or even to welcome new guests aboard must be a nightmare. ShadowCAT and Incat Crowther, the team behind the world’s largest and most impressive shadow vessel (Hodor, which actually exists), have an interesting proposition to make: a shadow vessel that can act as a buffer from the outside world.

Haven is a shadow vessel/catamaran, or ShadowCAT, that serves a multitude of purposes. It’s a concept unveiled in late 2020 that is still waiting for someone rich enough to come along and make it real. It offers an extra layer of protection for the mothership by cutting off all direct communication with the outside world. Of course, its functionality isn’t limited strictly to these troubling times: should all this blow over a year from now, it could resume its basic, superyacht-supporting duties.

Haven acts as a buffer between the mothership and the outside world by offering testing, quarantine, and isolation spaces, and a laboratory in two distinct areas made possible thanks to its twin hulls. On one side is the shore zone, in which all newcomers must remain until tested and cleared for transfer to the mothership zone. Infections are quarantined here, with the mothership zone reserved strictly for those who have negative test results.

“With the support of Haven, the Yacht need not have any direct with shore and all stores and transfers would be handled via ShadowCat,” reads the official description of the project. “Goods can be received from shore, sanitized or repackaged and transferred to the Yacht crew at the ‘clean side’ interface. Because of ShadowCat’s unique multi-hull design, segregation of goods and crew is simple.”

This sounds very much like something you’d see in a dystopian/post-apocalyptic horror movie, but it would be incredibly efficient at keeping owners and guests on the mothership safe in their social bubble. The shadow vessel has its own crew, a hospital, and laboratory, but would also use “nanotechnological surfaces” to destroy viruses and bacteria throughout, and innovative air-con and circulation systems to reduce the odds of spreading infection.

Haven would be its own, strictly controlled environment that would ensure guests on the mothership remained in their social bubble. “The owner’s yacht crew only come in contact with regularly screened and tested crew of the Shadow,” the description further says.

When not used in this capacity, Haven would serve as a “regular” shadow cat, offering support to the mothership. It would have a fueling station, a helipad, and the option to add a dedicated hangar, offices for security and aviation staff, as well as room to house all the toys so that the mothership would sail unencumbered. This includes storage space for at least a couple of tenders, six PWCs, a submarine, jet skis, and beach setup equipment.

In addition to the hospital and the laboratory, it would feature several research labs and luxurious lounge spaces and, like the perfect companion vessel, a diving center, and decompression chamber. It would even have hydroponic gardens, so the millionaires on board the mothership can get their greens and fruits directly from the source. More importantly, it could be further customized according to the needs of the future owner.

Powered by twin MTUs engines, Haven would have a 5,500-nautical mile range at a cruising speed of 12.5 knots, and the ability to sail at top speeds of 21.5 knots. In other words, it’s perfectly capable of holding its own against the superyacht.
