Harley J. Earl’s one-off 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible was auctioned off for a cool $1.5 million (€1.1 million / £940,000) at Mecum Auctions’ sale in Chicago this weekend.
Built as a one-of-a-kind vehicle for GM head of design Harley J. Earl, the Metallic Blue Corvette is one of only four Corvette fitted with a custom side exhaust and includes a bespoke dashboard. The vehicle was Earl’s personal driver for years and he even used it to pace the 1965 Daytona 500.
Harley J. Earl joined GM in 1928 and served the Detroit-based giant until 1958. He is regarded as one of the most significant innovators in the history of the American auto industry and is credited for the company’s Motorama dream cars. His most famous designs include the 1927 LaSalle and the Buick Y-Job concept.
