In 2019, Harley-Davidson will venture into the realm of electric motorcycles as the first major bike builder to do so. Its electric bike, the LiveWire, came to life as a prototype back in 2014, and now is getting ready to forever change the way two-wheeled motoring is done.
At the EICMA 2018 show in Milan, the Americans released a trove of details about the production version of the bike, painting a nearly complete picture of what the LiveWire will be all about. The only things that were not announced are the range, speed, acceleration and recharging time.

The LiveWire will use two batteries, one to drive the wheel motor, and a second to power the lights, controls, horn, and instrument display. The range battery can be charged from a Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3 charger using the power cord stored below the seat.

Spinning the 180 mm rear / 120 mm front wheels shoed in Michelin Scorcher tires is a permanent magnet electric motor that gives instant torque as soon as the throttle is engaged. The motor is located low in the motorcycle as to lower the center of gravity.

To make people aware a Harley-Davidson electric bike is in the area, the LiveWire will produce an audible tone that will increase in both volume and pitch as the bike accelerates.

The aluminum frame of the bike rides on fully adjustable Showa suspension (BFRC-lite rear and SFF-BP front). All LiveWires will come as standard with ABS and TCS.

Harley promises seven driving modes for the riders, four of which will be factory pre-defined and the extra three programmable by the riders. Control of the car’s systems will be done by using a color touchscreen TFT display.

The LiveWire will be manufactured in York, Pennsylvania, and will at first only be available in North America and Europe. Following the introduction of the LiveWire, Harley will launch a series of lighter, smaller versions, to be made available starting in 2022.
