More than 19,000 Harley-Davidson motorcycles are recalled by the NHTSA campaign number 14V794000 and are expected to visit the dealerships for upgrades to the front brake master cylinder. According to NHTSA sources, the potential number of units affected is 19,105, all belonging to the same 2012 model year.
Multiple versions of Dyna and Softail Harleys may have been fitted with an incorrectly manufactured banjo bolt in the front brake master cylinder. In certain conditions, the threads of this bolt may corrode under the action of the brake fluid and could cause leaks.

Potential loss of braking power for the front wheel

The thread corrosion in the banjo bolt could cause the brake fluid to leak out, leaving the rider with zero stopping power and increasing the risk of a crash. With some 75% of a bike’s braking power relying on the front brakes, it’s easy to understand how serious things can get.

Official NHTSA documents don’t mention any accidents or injuries, and this is most likely because of much less people riding Harleys this time of the year. However, all registered customers are being notified, so they can schedule a repair with their nearest dealer. At the same time, the H-D dealers have already received the necessary instructions and recall kits. They will inspect the front brake master cylinder and replace it if need be. However, Harley believes that only few masters will need replacement, while the problem will be solved with a new banjo bolt only.

Harley has two recall campaigns for this issue, because of the differences in the kit component required for certain bikes. Campaign 0163 addresses Dyna and Softail bikes, while the 0164 addresses the FXDF and FXDF103 model.

The affected bikes have been manufactured 08/22/2011 through 02/24/2012, and belong to the following series: 2012 FXST103, FLSTC, FLSTC103, FLSTF, FLSTF103, FXDL, FXDWG, FXDWG103, FXDC, FXDB, FLSTN, FLSTN103, FLSTC103Shrine, FLSTFB, FLSTFB103, FXS, FXS103, FLS, FLS103, FLD, FLD103, FXDF, and FXDF103.
