Hamilton Now Understands Aussie Pit Strategy from McLaren

After bursting at his team for more or less ruining his race in Australia, Lewis Hamilton now revealed he understands why McLaren made the call it did during the Sunday action at Albert Park. While racing in 3rd place, the Brit was called to the pits for a second tire change, therefore dropping to 5th place and setting off a recovery race in the final stages of the Aussie GP.

With some 5 laps to go, Hamilton told his team via radio that calling him to the pits for one additional time on Sunday was the worst decision ever, and afterwards showed his frustration at the end of the race. He eventually told the media that McLaren could have easily score a 1-2 at Albert Park, had he stayed on the track on a single pit-stop strategy.

One day later, however, after some further talks with the team's officials, Hamilton seems to have come back to his senses.

The team has explained to me their reasoning behind the second pitstop, and I can understand what they were trying to do in trying to cover both Mark and Nico for later in the race,” said the 2008 F1 champion.

We are still learning about this year's tires and the degradation, and perhaps we over-estimated the wear that the frontrunners were expecting to suffer. It's something you learn from, and we'll use that knowledge to help us improve throughout this season,” added Ham.

Shortly after Hamilton's outburst on Sunday, the team's principal Martin Whitmarsh insisted the reason why his drivers was called for a second time to the pits was because his tires had worn off. The same strategy was picked by Red Bull Racing for Mark Webber also, but the Aussie eventually finished in 9th place after an incident with Ham.
