Hamilton - McLaren Strategy Cost Us 1-2

Had McLaren Mercedes kept Lewis Hamilton on a single set of slick tires last Sunday, the team would have probably walked away from Australia with their first 1-2 of the season. That's how the 2008 Formula One champion looks at it, as he once again hit his team for calling him to the pits for a second set of slick tires.

My tires were fine. I started off on a good set, got a good start, was up to a pretty good position, up to third, happy with everything and I was pulled in - I don't know why I was pulled in,” said Hamilton on Sunday.

That is what lost us at least a one-two today. I think the tires would have been pretty good. I may have struggled towards the end, but that is how the other guys did - and it was almost impossible to overtake a Ferrari anyway,” added Hamilton, who started from 11th on the grid on Sunday.

After he pitted for the second time – same strategy picked by Red Bull for Mark Webber – Hamilton started posting some great lap times, exchanging places with the Australian driver in the fastest lap classification. In a matter of 10 to 15 laps, the duo recuperated more than 20 seconds to Fernando Alonso.

However, when trying to overtake the Spaniard, Hamilton admitted that his tires had worn off – telling his team via radio that his second stop was the worst decision – thus making his additional stop useless. In a late effort to pass the 2-time world champion, he was tipped from behind by Webber and ended up in the gravel.

While the Australian driver had to pit for repairs, Ham returned to the track and lost one position to Nico Rosberg, thus crossing the finish line in 6th place.
