Hamilton Disappointed with New FIA Rules

Lewis Hamilton joined the pack of drivers that expressed their disappointment over the new rules introduced by the FIA for 2009. While the F1 teams are complaining – through the voice of the Formula One Teams Association – about the voluntary budget cap to be implemented in 2010, the drivers find the new title-awarding system both chaotic and senseless.

Hamilton, who, under the new rules, would have lost last year's championship title to Felipe Massa, believes the changes will only confuse the F1 audience. He also insisted the drivers would have raced their hearts out no matter the new “medal system” ratified by the World Motor Sport Council this week.

“I think it's a shame what's happening to Formula 1. It's hard to believe that these recent decisions will improve things for the trackside spectators and TV viewers, who should always be our number-one priority, but I guess we'll have to wait and see. Whatever the points system, I know that all Formula 1 drivers will always race our hearts out,” said Hamilton, as reported by autosport.com.

He also echoed FOTA's CEO Luca di Montezemolo in blaming the FIA for not consulting with the teams before deciding on the new changes. The reigning world champion insisted that only a good collaboration between the two bodies, as well as with the drivers, can lead to an improved series in the near future.

“For the first time in recent years we have the teams, drivers, sponsors and fans all working together for the good of our sport - now we just need the governing bodies to listen to us and help us. Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport and that's what we all love about it; we should all be working together to maintain that,” added the McLaren driver.
