When Mick Schumacher made the switch from Formula 2 (which he won, back in 2020) to Formula 1 last year, he immediately went from being somebody who would frequently finish on the podium, to someone who couldn’t even get out of Q1.
It’s safe to say that it’s been a steep learning curve for the young German driver, especially since he didn’t receive much technical development help from his team – Haas chose to focus all its resources on the 2022 car, instead of further developing the 2021 design. This inadvertently guaranteed that Schumacher and Mazepin would stay glued to the back of the grid.
However, the former is now expecting great things from this year’s car, which he even helped develop.
“The car looks to be very positive, from what I see and hear,” Schumacher told Autosport. “So I have great expectations. Hopefully they’ll meet my expectations next year on track.”
The 2022 car is the first one that Schumacher has been able to have some influence over, with regards to development. The Haas driver also said that he’s been enjoying having to play this technical role and helping define the direction of the new car.
“It’s always something that has interested me for so many years, just how things work in general, and especially how a Formula 1 car works,” he stated.
“I’m quite heavily involved in what next year’s (2022) car is doing, and just want to understand it and see all that CAD models and stuff. So there are definitely lots of points that I’m looking forward to analyzing at the beginning of next year.”
Schumacher then concluded by saying that this has been the first time when a car has been “sort of built for me, and not built for everyone,” which automatically should give him a better chance to score some points once the season starts.
