"I broke five vertebrae and they had to rod my spine because I broke my sternum too. I broke five ribs and two metacarpals in right hand, too, and my hand's been plated," Guy Martin tells the BBC smiling. His words sound more like those of a man who can't exactly tell dreams from reality, but looking in his eyes, you see that Guy is as lucid as any other person.
After crashing violently in the Dundrod 150 race in Ireland in early August, we thought that it would pass quite a long time until we got to see Martin again. Still, Guy proves that he indeed has some Wolverine genes, as he is alive and kicking.
Believe it or not, Guy Martin spent five days in the hospital and six days recovering at home and then was off to his workshop, seeing to his life as a truck mechanic. He not only enjoys his work, but also knows it helps him with his recovery. "There's no better physio than working on trucks and I know when I'm doing too much, I'm not planning to do anything that puts the recovery back," Martin adds.
It has been five years since Martin was injured last in a serious crash, and he says that he is still planning to race motorbikes in the future. Still, he admits that seeing that "doing what needs to be done" as a mechanic tends to be much harder while recovering from a crash will make him more cautious as to his racing future.
For now, he has no firm plans for racing, and will concentrate on getting better and working on the trucks, with no plans for TV in perspective, either.
Judging by how busy this year was for Guy Martin, we'd say that he indeed took his grandfather's words literally. All in all, Guy raced in the Isle of Man TT and was on the podium, rode to India, broken speed records, flown a stunt plane, and done other things most of us only dream of.
