Gumpert Tornante by Touring Superleggera Heads to Geneva

German supercar maker Gumpert announced today it will debut a second model, the Tornante for the upcoming Geneva Auto Show, aside from the existing Apollo Sport hypercar. The Gumpert Tornante is a two-seater touring superleggera that is based on a new central engine chassis and V8-powered driveline.

The new hypercar will reportedly “opens a new class of automobiles born for the extremely dynamic and fast voyage, the Fast Tourers,” as the automaker says.

Although details are sketchy for the moment, the Gumpert Tornante reportedly features the original Superleggera construction principle: composite body panels on a space frame with carbon fiber monocoque.

“After setting new benchmarks for driving dynamics of street legal cars with the apollo, Gumpert requested the Milanese designer to add space, elegance and comfort to their typical sheer performance attitude. The result is a blend of very Italian sporty elegance and German high-end engineering,” a company statement reads.

The Gumpert brand is characterised by the griffin, a mythological creature that is half lion, half eagle, which stands as a symbol of strength and speed, not least a symbol of earth and air.

In 2009, the company’s apollo model set a new world record, becoming the fastest street legal car to lap the Nurburgring track, with a time of 7:11.57 minutes on the Nordschleife (subsequently, the record was broken by the Radical SR8LM).
