Guintoli Has Broken Ankle, Arm after Phillip Island Crash

Former MotoGP rider and current Effenbert-Liberty Ducati competitor in the World Superbike Championship, Sylvain Guintoli, was handed one bad news and one good news following the second round of the 2011 campaign held at Donington Park last weekend.

The bad news is that the Frenchman's injury sustained in the season opening race at Phillip Island, a month ago, is not as superficial as initially believed. Following a painful weekend at Donington Park, Guintoli has undergone a second medical check in Manchester on Monday, and X-rays and an MRI scan revealed that bones in his hand and ankle have been broken during the crash in Australia.

I spent all of Monday trying to find out why I had so much pain during the weekend in Donington. After some more X-rays and an MRI scan in Manchester, theses are the conclusions of my doctors in UK,” confirmed Guintoli in a statement for the press.

There are two fractures on my hand, one of which is quite bad. Fortunately, the bones have not moved and I should get better and better without surgery. There is also a fracture on my ankle that is not healed and is at risk of non-union. The bones have not moved. This means I will have to wear a support for 10 days and get some rest.

The good news, at least so far, is that the latest medical exam did not reveal the necessity of a surgery just yet. Meaning that he will be present at Assen, midway though April, for the upcoming round of the season, after which several other exams will indicate whether he needs surgery or not.

More exams will be made after the Assen race to make a decision about surgery or not,” he added.
