The 43-year old couldn't have made a more successful debut in his new career, as he took victory in the event. The best part is that in the six-car A Main Finale, the former WRC champion beat none other than X Games gold medallist and multi Rally America winner Tanner Foust.
“It was a nice weekend for me and for the team as well,” said Gronholm after winning both days of the event at the wheel of his Best Buy Ford Fiesta. “I am happy and my Ford Fiesta worked very well in the final. It was easy to drive and I was quite confident.”
“When I took the start I was quite confident that if I kept my line I could hold the lead and [Foust] couldn’t pass me. I had a lot of fun but whether I race anymore GRC events we will have to see.”
“What a final. I know I am not the first one to say ‘I just couldn’t catch Marcus Gronholm’. He like just disappeared and by the first corner his Fiesta was just a little bit out of reach and even though I had the fastest splits on the Joker lap I fell behind. I was impressed with the first weekend of the GRC,” added Rockstar Energy Drink driver and Top Gear host, Foust.
Also competing in the event were Subaru Rally Team USA driver Dave Mirra, European rallycross veteran Michael Jernberg and five-time British rally champion Marcus Dodd.
This year's GRC will feature an overall 4 rounds, as action in the series will resume on April 15th, at the Twin Peaks Old Mill Rally Park in Seattle, Washington. the following two rounds are scheduled for June 17/18 (Last Chance, Pikes Peak Raceway, Colo. Springs, Colorado) and the season finale July 31 (X Games 17, Los Angeles, California).
