Grasp Fingerprint Bike Lock Is New Age Anti-Theft Gizmo

Paying $160 to secure your bicycle may seem a little expensive, but if the green two-wheeler is your daily commute, you may want to consider this thing. Sure, this is not the regular bicycle grip, thinking that its biometric fingerprint sensor provides enhanced security, for starters.

Currently one of the popular projects on Kickstarter, Grasp Lock is manufactured by a Canadian start-up which claims that the gadget leverages the world’s smallest optical fingerprint sensor with an industry tested and proven algorithm. It’s finished with a soft touch plastic, thus protecting the bicycle’s frame from any scratches. It was also designed with gentle curves, so the lock glides over any bike and bike rack.

It’s water-resistant, uses three AAA batteries that will last over one year, and even if they deplete, Grasp remains locked. Regarding its main construction, the security gizmo’s creators claim it’s forged from the same hardened steel alloy as some of the strongest locks on the market. The lock hinges are protected by a reinforced steel shell to resist attacks.

Some urban commuters may fear that buying one would stop them from bike-sharing anymore. Wrong. It allows the user to give access to family and friends using the lock’s app. The first time you open the app, it will link the phone to the lock using a unique code. Once the setup is done, you can add up to 20 additional fingerprints to the lock. Moreover, user access can be removed from the manage page, and you can also set time intervals for when others have access to the lock.

“With the Grasp Lock, bicycle security has never been easier. It reads your fingerprint and unlocks in less than a second. It’s ergonomic design lets it slide on and off your bike easily. The hinged arms allow for maneuverability, so you don’t have to reach over your bike to secure it.”

A functional prototype has already been developed, with the Kickstarter campaign looking after funds to put the thing on the market. Retail price is estimated at $159, with first deliveries scheduled for November 2016.
