Graham Rahal Will Drive for His Father at Indy 500

Graham Rahal will drive for his father's IndyCar team for the first time in his career. And it will not happen in any regular IndyCar race, but on the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) during this month's Indy 500 race.

Although catching the eyes of several teams in his first 2 campaigns in the series, Rahal failed to secure a full-time seat with his former team Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing for the 2010 season due to sponsorship reasons. Consequently, he started looking for selected appearances in the championship.

After the season opening race in Sao Paolo, Rahal signed a 3-race deal with Sarah Fisher Racing. That contract ended after the race at Long Beach, after which he has been contacted by NHL Racing for a potential return. Again, it was a sponsoring problem that prevented him from making the grid in Kansas.

He will return to the series with Rahal Letterman for the Indy 500, this being the team's second outing in the IZOD IndyCar Series since 2008. Since last season, Bobby Rahal's team has switched focus from the North American open-wheel series to the American Le Mans Series (with BMW).

I think he has proven he belongs and I'm thrilled to have him. It's flattering when your child wants to do what you do, even better when he wants to do it for you,” Rahal was quoted as saying to USA Today.

Graham will therefore attempt to finish the Indy 500 race for the third consecutive time, following the crashes he sustained during the 2008 and 2009 editions of the race.
