Today’s dose of heartbreak and unscripted reality television comes from the latest viral video of a raccoon mourning its dead mate, then trying to revive it as it lay in the middle of the road.
Roadkill is a common sight on roads across the world, but that doesn’t mean that the family and friends of those animals don’t suffer when these accidents happen. So, one day, a raccoon got hit by a car and was killed on the spot.

What follows is like something from a reality show, but this time, we know for a fact it’s not scripted. You can see it in the video below, with the person who shot it also serving as narrator.

“That’s a possum, one of them got hit. He ain’t moving, bro. Like, he just sitting there. I guess his girlfriend – oh he praying. He praying,” the man says. “I guess his girlfriend got hit or whatever, or whoever that is that got hit by the car… and then he just fell out crying.”

As he’s saying this, the possum, which had been looking at its mate’s dead body, falls backwards, as if in pain. It lays there for a while, then slowly gets up and walks over to the dead body. From where the camera is, it looks as if it’s trying to get its mate to wake up.

“Boy life is real the – life is real out here. This is crazy. You won’t see no s**t like this. A God damn possum. A f***ing possum. This is crazy y’all. Look at it going trying to go get her up – you see this? He trying to go get her up,” the narrator explains. “Oh my God he tryna get her up. This is so sad, yo I’m gonna cry. This is crazy. Momma, this is crazy.”

Another driver is just as shocked at the scene as our narrator, so she stopped the car in the middle of the road to allow the raccoon time to mourn. She finally starts the car and leaves, making sure to go around the 2 raccoons, when other cars queue behind her.

While the reality of what went down on that road might elude us for ever and could be less dramatic than what the narrator makes it sound, the Wildlife Animal Control says that these animals are highly intelligent and very attached to their family. They’re also complicated and think very fast, being on average smarter than a human toddler. So there.
