The GP3 racing series has just showed off the car for the 2013 season. It is different to what is currently raced in a few ways, but the most important difference is the new engine. The Renault-sourced 2.0-liter turbocharged unit which produced 280 hp will be replaced with a considerably larger engine - a naturally-aspirated V6 with 400 hp.
In this age of downsizing and turbocharging this is clearly not the ‘greenest’ thing the organizers could have done, yet they say that their main objective with the power hike was to make GP3 more of a stepping stone for GP2, and then, ultimately, Formula One.

Head of the racing series, Bruno Michel said: "Our main objective was to make sure that GP3 remains the best way to prepare young drivers for the next steps, GP2 and F1, which is why we designed a more powerful and more selective car that, among other things, reduces the gap between GP3 and GP2 [. . .] In order to do so, we carefully assessed the different single-seater categories below GP2 and took into account observations from our drivers and teams [. . .] We're convinced that the way we've positioned the GP3/13 is the right one for the next three seasons."

Testing of the all-new car began in July and it will be ready by the commencement of the next season.
