Last summer, the NHTSA asked Chrysler to recall 2.7 million 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2002-2007 Jeep Liberty models. The Pentastar initially refused to recall the SUVs, but later agreed to call back about 1.5 million and fit them with trailer hitches that help protect the gas tanks.

In a statement issued last week, the agency said it has “no reservations” with Chrysler Group’s plan to recall further vehicles, adding that it will monitor the manufacturer’s recall as it continues. A full report will be released in a few weeks, the Detroit Free Press reports.

The concerned 1993-2004 Grand Cherokee and 2002-2007 Liberty SUVs are fitted with plastic gas tanks located between the rear bumper and axle, which makes them vulnerable in the case of a rear-end crash. 15 deaths and 41 injuries related to this issue have been reported.
