An allegedly axe murder captured on Google Street View that brought panic to the world of online breaking news turned out to be a prank. Funny thing is that even the two mechanics from Edinburgh that made the hoax two years ago, almost forgot about it until the officers turned up at their door.
We’re pretty sure you’ve used Google Street View at least once to try to do something else than what it was designed for. For instance, you probably used it to look for yourself two years ago or see if your house looked better when you were younger. Anyway, that is exactly what these two Scottish mechanics probably thought when they designed their little prank.
The Google images appeared to show a young man with an axe in hand, standing over his lifeless victim on a cobblestone street in Edinburgh, Scotland. A Google user thought he had seen a real murder when he decided to pick up the phone and thell the police about it. So, officers from Scotland Police force were deployed to investigate. Luckily they discovered the cold-blooded homicide and his lifeless victim were actually a pair of mechanics from Tomson’s Motor Company, on Giles Street.
Dan Thompson, 56, who owns Thomson Motor Co in Giles, and his colleague Gary Kerr, a 31-year-old mechanic, who stood over the poor Thompson with a pickaxe handle, ended up having a good laugh while the policemen solve their case.
The pair staged the “killing” in August 2012, and had forgotten about it until the images went live in late 2013: “two uniformed officers came down to the garage to interview us. They were treating it seriously at first - I was mortified because we didn’t want to waste police time. We explained to the police what we had done and they thought it was hilarious,” Kerr told edinburghnews.scotsman.com.
The only question left is whether or not the police’s answer to a possible murder was quick enough. But we’ll let you guys decide on this one.
