While Google Maps is the world’s number one navigation app, this doesn’t necessarily mean everything is working just flawlessly 24/7.
It’s not a secret many people out there have been struggling with GPS problems in Google Maps, and while the experience has been further refined lately, such errors are yet to be resolved completely.
But in the meantime, it looks like Google has been busy improving another feature in Google Maps, as some discovered that the navigation part of the app no longer worked correctly.
While it’s not exactly clear who was affected and who wasn’t, social media sites out there, including Twitter, have been flooded with reports that the Start button allowing users to begin the navigation just went missing. Again, this only happened in some regions, and we’re seeing reports Nigeria was one of the countries where the problem affected a substantial number of users.
Others claimed that despite the button was there, they just couldn’t start the navigation to an address already saved in Google Maps. And the only workaround, in this case, was to manually type the destination in the app.
Google has recently acknowledged the problems and indeed confirmed that users in some specific regions were affected. The company says everything is supposed to work correctly now, as a fix has already been deployed in these markets.
The good news is the problem hasn’t been too widespread, though the information in this regard remains very limited at the time of writing. This was mostly caused by a change on Google’s side, and it wasn’t linked with a recent update Google Maps received on Android or iPhone.
In the meantime, Google has also been working on adding other updates to Google Maps, and according to reports, full support for a dark mode is now rolling out to some users out there. Again, it’s not known who gets it and who doesn’t, and the release happens in stages at a rather slow pace.
