Google’s push of its autonomous car legislation seems relentless, after legalization in Nevada, the rest of the country will probably soon follow. The bill, presented by Google, passed the California State Senate today, with a unanimous vote, assuring that it will reach the State Assembly for further debate.
As you are reading this, Senate Bill 1298 is on its way to the State Assembly, and it is expected to be passed by the end of June. The author of the bill, Senator Alex Padilla said “Thousands of Californians tragically die in auto accidents each year. The vast majority of these collisions are due to human error. Through the use of computers, sensors and other systems, an autonomous vehicle can analyze the driving environment more quickly and accurately and can operate the vehicle more safely.”
If the bill is passed, it will enable the set up of a series of safety guidelines and performance standards, in order for the California Highway Patrol to evaluate the operation of self-drivers in the sunny state, which, along with Arizona, Florida, Oklahoma and Hawaii have announced their interest in adopting the new legislation.
